Speaking on Friday to the Indpendente after a conflict prevention meeting in Dili, Ms. Costa rejected such claims of propaganda from political parties saying name calling rhetoric was not out of step with political rallying.
The comments came as accusations rise of a link between gaining political support and the alleged brazen attack by Rama Ambon that left two people injure.
Ms. Costa denied the case was politically motivated, saying civil society groups following the campaign had found “no” breach in campaign conduct.
“We have the connection with political parties and if there is some anarchism on the campaign we will directly inform the police to take action,’’ she said.
On 16 April Alcino Baris, the National Election Commission (CNE) Chief, warned the Fretilin and the Parliamentary Majority Alliance (AMP) party that they were walking a thin line between campaigning and propaganda, calling for an end to the insult war.
Baris said CNE had documented several campaign infringements from the two main parties.
“The bad words which are used by political leader to insult one another can emerge into violence,” Baris said.
Timor-Leste’s campaign has entered its third week ahead of the general on election on May 12.
