Repairs Delay Launch of Timor-Leste’s $13.5 million Passenger Ferry Featured

DILI:  Repair work has delayed the launch of Timor-Leste’s new multi-million dollar passenger ferry, Inácio Moreira, the Vice Minister of Public Works and Telecommunication, said Monday.

The $13.5 million fast boat was financed under the Special Economic Zones for Social Market Economy (ZEESM), to operate between Dili and Atauro Island.

The “Haksolok” - meaning happiness in Tetun-  vessel was inaugurated on May 26 in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, but a launch date in Timor-Leste is unknown.

“Myself and the Minister of Strategic Planning have inspected the vessel but there is still repair work needed on the navigation component,” Moreira said.

The 72 meter boat has the capacity to carry 377 passengers, 23 vehicles and up to 3,500 kilograms of cargo.

The contract between the Portuguese shipowner and Atlanticeagle Shipbuilding for the construction of the ferry was signed in September 2014 and the work began in July of the following year.
