DILI: Immigration staff working at the Dili airport and Indonesian land border have been accused of taking bribes of up to $400 for fast-tracking of visas, according to the Interior Minister Filomeno Paixao.

Paixoa said an investigation into the “negligent” behaviour had been requested from Corruption Eradication Commission (CAC).

"Some cases have been submitted to CAC to conduct an investigation and some cases are still being scrutinized by the investigating part from the Ministry of Internal Affairs," Paixao said Tuesday.

According to Paixao 32 cases of illegal bills to people crossing into Timor-Leste had been identified.

Because Timor-Leste does not have an electronic system tracking migration across borders Paixao said it had been difficult to detect the illegal bribing.

He called on the Ministry of Internal Affairs to finance an automated tracking system to replace the current manual system.
