DILI – Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri has reiterated his country’s support for the Saharawi people’s self-determination struggle during a reception with Mohamed Salama Badi, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (RASD) ambassador in Dili.

The desert territory, which is rich in phosphate, is listed by the United Nations as a non-decolonized territory, included in the UN list of non-self governing territories. It is claimed by both the Kingdom of Morocco and the Sahrawi popular liberation group, the Polisario Front.

Badi said violations had been committed by Morocco against the Sahrawi civilian population and urged a need to create a UN mechanism to protect human rights and stop the pillage of the natural resources of Western Sahara.
The ambassador spoke about the obstacles that France puts to prevent the application of international legality.
Both sides addressed bilateral relations and ways to deepen them in order to safeguard the interests of the two peoples.
