DILI: Timor-Leste faces a period of greater unity amongst political parties after the government’s 2018 State Budget gained unanimous support in parliament on Friday, according to Prime Minister Taur Matan Ruak.

Addressing parliament after the budget approval, Ruak praised contributions from opposition parties Fretilin and the Democratic Party, saying “despite differing opinions” major political parties demonstrated a common goal of “building a bright future for Timor-Leste.”

The total budget for October, November and December 2018, which includes the amount of loans, is expected to reach US$ 1,279.6 million.

It is divided into: US$ 200,312 million for salaries and wages; US$ 421,666 million for goods and services; US$ 261,925 million for public transfers; US$ 3,659 million for Minor Capital; and US$ 392.037 million in Development Capital, which includes the Infrastructure and Loans Fund.

During the six-day parliamentary budget discussion the performance of Ruak’s new coalition government was heavily debated.

Addressing the concerns, Ruak stressed his government was committed to responsible and transparent implementation of state programs.

Ruak also said he encouraged inclusiveness within programming, urging civil society cooperation.

He singled out building economic growth, building infrastructure and improving health, social integration, clean water and sanitation access, electricity, and environmental protection as key national development targets.

The budget approval ends almost a year of political paralysis within Timor-Leste.

On 26 January 2018 President Francisco “Lo Olo” Guterres dissolved parliament, in a bid to end months-long political impasse that had pushed Timor-Leste into a post-election stalemate.
