DILI: At first glance a coming together of Timor-Leste’s youth to mark Valentines Day in a garden in Dili, may seem like a lighthearted affair. But for the organisers of Tuesday’s event, those assembled had a very serious message they wanted the nation’s leaders to stand up and hear: “down your political tension and spread love and peace.”

Speaking to the Independente in the lead up to the nation’s fourth presidential election in May, Kalohan Domin said leaders should take notice of the “important” event, and Timorese youth wish for their country developed with “love and peace.”

Natália dos Anjos, a Health and Science university student said: “Some people interpret Valentine’s Day as just a day for loving between the boyfriend and girlfriend but this day is to share your love to all people that you love.”

At the same time, FRETILIN Presidential candidate, Francisco Guterres ‘Lu-Olo’, said his message for Valentine’s Day was “for all people around the world to love one another,” adding love was integral for humanity.

The pleas for care and compassion came as President of the Republic Taur Matan Ruak, urged community members to speak their mind and not be intimated by people in power as is “your right.”

“Why are you are afraid? Are you afraid of Xanana or Alkatiri?” said Ruak, urging community members at the Community of  Usitasae Village, Sub Administrative Oesilu-Oekusi to speak out about violations.

The President encouraged people to be “brave” and speak of their concerns in public rather than behind closed doors.
