DILI: Timor-Leste’s COVID-19 cases rose at the slowest pace in nearly two weeks on Tuesday, but authorities said they needed to see a steady drop in daily cases before deciding whether infections had peaked after months with restrictions on domestic movement.

Timor-Leste reported 118 new cases on Tuesday, the majority in Dili, down from 190 seven days prior. Two deaths were reported.

Nearly half of Timor-Leste’s population is living with restrictions that prevents unvaccinated people moving in and out of their municipality, including people in Dili, Baucau, Ermera and Covalima, as the country grapples with a wave of infections from the fast-moving Delta variant.

The health fences preventing movement are in place until at least 22 September.

Authorities continue to push COVID-19 vaccinations as a way to manage virus spread.

Currently 31.1 per cent of Timor-Leste’s adult population are fully vaccinated and 54.2% have received one COVID-19 vaccine, according to official health data.
