The appointment of Hornai, an experienced public servant, came after the unexpected and sad death of Amândio de Sá Benevides, on 20th January.
“(Hornai) is responsible for creating conditions to support the justice sector in whatever is necessary, so that all justice officials can carry out their duties with greater predictability, tranquillity, security and comfort,” Horta said during the inauguration ceremony at Nicolao Lobato Presidential Palace, after he appointed Hornai, a former General Public Defender and State Counsellor and Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Hornai vowed to “loyally fulfill the functions in which [he is] invested, comply with and enforce the constitution and laws, and dedicate all [his] energies and capabilities in defence of the consolidation of independence and national unity,” according to a government statement.
During his speech opening, Ramos-Horta once again paid tribute to Benevides, who he said, “provided valuable service to the country throughout his life and in particular as Minister of Justice”.
Ramos-Horta told parliament during the swearing-in speech that Hornai would be tasked with strengthening the Public Defender’s Office, adding greater support and attention to this office must be prioritised.
