Horta, a long-term patron of Arte Morris, made the commitment at the launch of the largest Timorese artist group exhibition ever held in Timor-Leste, that marked the 20 years of the restoration of independence.
Within his promise to look after Timorese artists, Horta said he would open the Presidential Palace for the group to meet in while advocating for a permanent building to house the free art school and residence.
“As President of the Republic I am willing to give you an office within the Presidential Palace,” said Ramos-Horta to artists at the exhibition launch. “This will be temporary alternative while we seek a better place for you.”
In December 2021, Arte Morris was evicted from its building by the government in order to house army veterans
Several art, cultural and civil society groups have condemned the eviction of Arte Moris from the iconic residence where artists have trained and lived since 2002.
