With more than 99 percent of votes counted in the poll, Timor-Leste’s opposition Alliance of Change for Progress (AMP) looks set to form a majority government with the coalition party picking up 49.59 per cent of the total votes. This leaves it with 34 of 65-seat parliament.
Fretilin, which narrowly won last July’s poll, scored about 36 percent of votes, leaving it with 23 seats.
Mari Alkatiri, Leader of Fretilin, said the party refused to accept the Oecusse vote.
“I don’t trust the result in Oecusse,” Alkatiri told reporters on Monday. “I will do the investigation and then will bring the evidence to the court,’’ he said.
Questioned about forming an opposition coalition, Alkatiri said his party would stand alone and ensure the new government was kept to account.
