Lu Olo, President of the Republic has said he’s open to re-candidature for the 2022 election, as too Lere, Timor-Leste’s Commander of  Defence Forces (F-FDTL) .

But commentators declare it’s still too early to say who their party will stand behind at the election, and there’s talk in the party of a need to support the young and next generation politicians.

" We are waiting for the Fretilin party to make that decision. After our meeting that will relate to this decision we will know. In one to two months we will clarify,” said Flavio Maria Guterres, Deputy of General Secretary of Fretilin.

“Whoever will be the one appointed during the meeting by Fretilin’s Central Committee will be an official decision,” he said.

Timor-Leste is due to hold presidential elections in the period from March to May 2022.
