DILI: Timor-Leste’s police commissioner has said arrests have been made in connection to campaign violence between opposition political parties in Los Palos and Makadiki over the weekend.

Violent weekend clashes broke out between supporters of the Fretilin party and backers of the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (CNRT).

Some 16 people were injured and two vehicles were torched, according to the Australia-Timor-Leste Election Observer Mission.

Julio Hornai said a suspect had been arrested in connection to the Los Palos violence and the investigation continued.

"We are investigating the 5 suspects, we will continue this process and all those involved will be arrested," Hornai said.

He said the man who had been arrested had been intoxicated at the time.

Victims of the attack remain in hospital.

President of the Republic, Fransisco Gutteres Lu Olo urged the police to maintain peace and security.

The President also encouraged youth to show political maturity in the final week of the campaign.
