COVID-19: WHO Says Repeat Boosters Not Good Strategy Featured

DILLI: The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Tuesday expressed caution about relying on repeating booster doses of the original COVID-19 vaccines, saying it was not a viable strategy against emerging variants.

The statement comes as Omicron cases surge globally, with Indonesia seeing cases triple in a week and Australia’s caseload topping one million on Tuesday.

WHO predicts that more than half of Europe’s population will be infected with the highly infectious but milder Omicron coronavirus variant within the next six to eight-weeks.

Meanwhile, just two new cases of COVID-19 were detected in Timor-Leste in the past 48 hours, bringing total number of active cases to 25, said heath authorities.

These two new cases were found in Bobonaro.

Health authorities have confirmed that there are no people with COVID-19 in hospital.

Timor-Leste has fully vaccinated 69% of its adult population, with some variation between municipalities that range from Dili (81%), Viqueque (82%) to Ermera and Bobonaro with 50.8% and 51.9% respectively.
