Tension between the two rival parties has been in public view as leaders trade personal insults in the lead up to next month’s May 12 election.
He said the war of words directed at individual leaders was misleading and could insight violence.
Speaking Monday at an election overview meeting in Dili, Baris said the CNE had documented several campaign infringements from the two main parties.
“The bad words which are used by political leader to insult one another can emerge into violence,” Baris said.
While political parties were keeping supporters separated and respecting the campaign schedule, he warned maintaining peace meant ending hostile campaigning.
