DILI: National Police Commissioner Faustino da Costa has earmarked 3800 police members to oversee the security of the up-coming state elections, amid concern over conflict between supporters of rival political parties.

Police will be spread across the country and stationed at its 690 polling stations to ensure a peaceful election process, Costa said on Tuesday.

“At polling stations where there is a potential for emerging conflict we will allocate more members of police to strengthen the security,” he said.

The Commissioner said police members would be supported by a special security taskforce.

Timor-Leste is set to go the polls on March 20 for the Presidential election. Nearly 750,000 Timorese are registered vote.
