DILI: The removal of sand from Comoro River has increased the possibility of homes nearby being damaged by floodwater, the Ministry of Public Works Transportation and Communication (MOPTK) has said, amid calls for an enquiry into the construction companies extracting sand from the river.

Heavy rain on Sunday flooded the Comoro River breaking the once high riverbanks and destroying nearby homes.

Gastão Sousa, from MOPKT, said the companies extracting large volumes of sand from the fragile environment were working under the operative from the National Petroleum Authority.

“We have to cheek these companies licenses carefully,” Sousa said. He said any company found working in breach of their license must be stopped.
