DILI:Leaders from across Asia, Europe and the Pacific have paid tribute to Timor-Leste as the country marked the 24th anniversary of the restoration of its independence on May 20.

ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn, speaking during commemorations in Dili, said the anniversary reflected Timor-Leste’s “continued commitment to national development, international engagement, and regional integration”, according to remarks published by ASEAN. He also highlighted the country’s recent accession to ASEAN as a historic milestone.

From Cambodia, President Hun Sen sent what he described as “sincere congratulations and best wishes” to President José Ramos-Horta, the government and the Timorese people, according to Cambodian state media and diplomatic messages released for the anniversary.

Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles travelled to Dili for the celebrations and described the anniversary as an important regional moment.

“I am honoured to visit Timor-Leste on the 24th anniversary of its Restoration of Independence,” Marles said in a government statement. “Australia has an enduring defence partnership with Timor-Leste, built on shared interests and mutual benefit. Australia will continue to stand with Timor-Leste as close partners in defence and security.”

Portugal also paid tribute to the anniversary. Portuguese leaders and diplomats described May 20 as a symbol of resilience, democracy and self-determination, while reaffirming Portugal’s longstanding friendship and cooperation with the Timorese people, according to statements published by Portuguese institutions and media.

US President Donald Trump sent congratulations to Ramos-Horta and the Timorese people, according to a statement released by the Timor-Leste presidency. Trump congratulated the country on both its independence anniversary and ASEAN membership, calling it “a historic milestone that reflects your nation’s growing role in the region”.

Messages also arrived from liberation movements with historical ties to Timor-Leste’s independence struggle. Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic President Brahim Ghali praised Timor-Leste’s “achievements in democracy, stability, and global engagement”, according to a message published by the Sahrawi Press Service. He said the anniversary served as “an inspiration to all nations striving for justice and sovereignty”.

Speaking at the national celebrations in Dili, President José Ramos-Horta said the anniversary was not only a moment to remember the country’s long struggle for freedom, but also an opportunity to look forward.

“We honour all those who sacrificed for our independence and reaffirm our commitment to building a just, peaceful and prosperous nation for future generations,” Ramos-Horta said during his Independence Restoration Day address.
